Bored in the winter? Try ice diving!

How many songs and poems are written about the Russian winter? Do not count. About ice diving in Russia, perhaps, songs and poems will also appear soon. Perhaps such poems and songs have already begun to appear. At least about the existence of films on this subject, we are one hundred percent sure. A striking example of this is the series of documentary videos and photographs that were shot in the framework of the project “Secrets of sunken ships.” Starting as part of a public initiative back in 2002, the project immediately became a famous scientific event. Many sensational discoveries were made, both in the Gulf of Finland and in the area of lakes Ilmen, Ladoga and some others. Amazing finds continue to this day, and some of them are made during winter diving. Anyone, with a certain level of diving training, can join the ongoing research at any time. And if a beginner wants to see at least a dozen sunken ships at the research site of the project, he will be very surprised. There are not a dozen of them. And not two dozen. There are hundreds of them. Hundreds of beautifully preserved marine historical monuments belonging to different eras. Battleships, submarines, wheeled steamers. And this is only a small part of the diversity that shakes the imagination of any person who has personally visited the unique maritime museum created by nature itself.

But back to the story of winter diving. The first thing to note about this interesting lesson is that in winter the water in the reservoirs becomes much more transparent than in the summer. And even the most murky river, in which absolutely nothing was visible in the summer, in winter it becomes much more hospitable and reveals all its secrets to brave lovers of ice-diving.

Diving under ice is a very specific kind of scuba diving that requires special skills and a number of requirements. First of all, it should be borne in mind that ice-swimming courses are held in different organizations in different ways, and there is no single standard. However, there are several universal requirements. The diver must be at least fifteen (in some organizations at least eighteen) years old. He must have the skills to make a lane (places for diving under the ice), be able to choose places to dive, and also know by heart all the signals given by the signal cable. Before diving, any intoxication, such as drinking alcohol and smoking, is absolutely ruled out.

In addition to special skills, in frosty days, the diver must use a winter (dry) wetsuit, the price of which is significantly higher than the “summer” one, since the winter kit for diving uses much more materials using high technology compared to summer equipment. During winter dives, it is recommended to use diving masks that completely cover the entire face, and not just the eyes and nose. Three-fingered gloves will keep warm much longer. It is also advisable to abandon digital electronics, replacing it with analog devices. Carefully considering all these wishes, you can ensure yourself a safe and comfortable immersion in the ice kingdom.
