What tricks have people not resorted to to get into the kingdom of Neptune, not accessible to creatures whose airways are not adapted to live under water! The ancients exhausted themselves with lengthy workouts, allowing them to hold their breath for several tens of seconds longer. Another idea came up with the use of lumps of wool or animal fur, in which air bubbles are trapped. The first device used by primitive divers for diving was a long straw through which they breathed while under water. In the 16th century, an air bell and a leather suit began to be used, which was filled with air pumped from the surface. Diving suits gradually improved and for a long time served people as faithful helpers in various underwater works.
But a real breakthrough in the study of the underwater world occurred only in the 20th century, when scuba gear was invented almost at the same time and the first bathyscaphe was built. In 1910, a slightly improved model of the Henry Fluss submarine, invented back in 1878, found its application as the rescue equipment of the English submarine fleet. The use of a similar apparatus called the scuba gear was proposed in 1943 by Jacques Yves Cousteau, a well-known underwater explorer. Together with engineer Emil Ganyan, Cousteau was offered the first scuba gear designed for mass use. Scuba invented by Cousteau was repeatedly tested by the inventor himself, who proved its safety by diving to a depth of 60 meters.
The main part of scuba gear are cylinders with compressed air under pressure of 150-200 atmospheres. The capacity of the cylinders is from 5 to 10 liters, but sometimes 14-liter giants are also used. The second integral part of the scuba device is the regulator, whose function is to reduce the pressure of the air mixture to a level suitable for breathing. From the cylinders through the stopcocks, air enters the regulator, equipped with a manometer, which allows you to control the amount of respiratory mixture in the cylinders and its pressure. The regulator most often has a two-stage air pressure reduction system and consists of a gearbox (first stage) and a pulmonary machine (second stage). After reducing the pressure, the respiratory mixture from the pulmonary machine is fed through the mouthpiece to the airways of the diver.

Today it’s not at all difficult to find a store where you can buy scuba gear, since there are many online stores that deliver purchased goods. The cost of scuba diving, like the rest of diving equipment, is relatively high. But you can always rent scuba gear by contacting your instructor, who will certainly help you with this. To refuel scuba cylinders with compressed air, electric or gasoline compressors are used, which can always be found in any large diving center. Scuba gears require regular monitoring and preventive maintenance, because your safety depends on the health of the “water lung”.
How to choose a snorkeling mask
Choosing a snorkeling mask is just as important as buying a fins or diving suit. The mask protects the eyes and nose, so this accessory is on a par with the rest of the diving equipment. Masks are usually distinguished by the following indicators: material, quantity and quality of glasses, as well as the presence of additional elements (for example, ear protection).
The icon, which is used to make the part of the mask that is adjacent to the face, can be transparent, black or color. If you use a mask made of black silicone, the view will be narrowed to the cone that allows you to see the glass. Colored silicone can be distracting. Transparent allows you to capture a much larger space. Depending on the goal that you are pursuing, you should choose one or another color of the silicone mask. For example, beginner divers are advised to use clear silicone.
To understand how to choose a mask that does not damage your eyesight, we examine the range of glasses. Masks for swimming differ fundamentally by the number of glasses. Monoglass (one lens) is suitable for shallow dives, including for beginners. Double glass (two lenses) are suitable for deeper dives, this type of mask is considered more reliable.
